Virginia's Purse Award

If only [women] had left their money, like their fathers and their grandfathers before them, to found fellowships and lectureships and prizes and scholarships appropriated to the use of their own sex, we might have...looked forward...to a pleasant and honourable lifetime spent in the shelter of one of the liberally endowed professions. We might have been sitting contemplative on the steps of the Parthenon, or going at ten to an office and coming home...to write a little poetry...

The Virginia's Purse Award will be presented again this year, deadline for applications is April 30, 2010.

One award of $500.00.

Application Criteria: Student currently enrolled as a Women's Studies major at KU.

Application Procedure: Nominations may be self-nominations or nominations from the faculty. The applicant must submit the following materials:

  1. A cover letter that includes name, address, phone, e-mail and evening phone.
  2. Proof of Jr. or Sr. standing and major in WS (Arts form will do)
  3. A short essay (1-2 pages typed, double-spaced) that discusses your activism, scholarship, and/or leadership in women's issues.
  4. A letter of recommendation.
